GameFi demonstrated globally and has been growing in 2022
2021 was undoubtedly the year of NFT and GameFi. NFTs generated $23 billion in trading volume, while GameFi generated over $2.3 billion in Q3 alone.
As GameFi’s biggest player, Axie Infinity became the most traded NFT collection ever with $4 billion in historical trading volume. This trend continues in 2022 when in the first week of January, the top 10 GameFi dapps attracted more than $2 million unique active wallets and generated $841 millions in volume. This shows that GameFi will continue to grow in 2022.
However, there remain barriers and market gap
Despite the fact that GameFi has grown significantly, the industry is currently facing challenges because GameFi is still in its early stages. With the proliferation of GameFi dapps, potential scams or “rug pull” are difficult to avoid. That’s what happened with a game based on the Netflix show Squid Game: its currency plummeted from $2,860 to near zero in one day after the game’s creators pulled out over $3 million.
Another challenge that users may face is to compete with bots, which are computers programmed to play these games efficiently and profitably, resulting in unfairness for regular players. Furthermore, most GameFi dapps lack aesthetic appeal to users, ranging from clunky and complicated UI to low-quality in-game characters. As a result, users expect to see more fun and accessible GameFi dapps in the coming years.
GameFi's future is dependent on determined developers
To create an everlasting game on blockchain, developers must combine the quality of traditional games and the economics that GameFi can provide. We have not seen AAA games in the GameFi space yet, so this is an opportunity for developers to bridge the traditional gaming gap. In addition, the economies of popular games such as World of Warcraft, Minecraft, or Fortnite have long played an important role in attracting players. This is also an important aspect that every GameFi dapp needs to get right from the start.
